Exercise and Our Health

There was a weekly safety meeting over here on this rig Ensco 109.  One of the topic was about exercise, presented by the personal trainer here.  Yup, you got that right, they've got a personal trainer here assigned for this rig, how professional.

In this presentation, the personal trainer mentioned that if we don't exercise, our body will become atrophy.  Never heard of the word atrophy before, so I memorised it, make sure I would look it up in the dictionary.

In dictionary, the definition of atrophy is:-
1. (of body tissue or an organ) waste away, especially as a result of the degeneration of cells, or become vestigial during evolution.
2. gradually decline in effectiveness or vigour.
· n. (pl. atrophies) the condition or process of atrophying.

Sound scary huh.  That means our limbs will eventually become useless if we stay inactive for a long period of time.  Think of it, with the ever evolving technology in this modern world, where robots are created to replace what human can do, are we all going to become useless in the future?  Will the world end up just like what's in the cartoon Wall-E?  It's possible that human being depend too much on technology already now.

Perhaps that's why thousands of years ago our ancestors could build the China Great Wall, The Great Pyramid and all other great wonders.  They had great body and raw powers which we don't have nowadays because they didn't have machinery to help them then???

Anyway, it's general knowledge that we do need to exercise to stay healthy.  Exercise helps to improve blood circulation thus oxygen and nutrients transportation to all parts in our body, helps body to detox by sweating, not feeling tired easily, improve body reaction, improve mental alertness, freshness and also the ability to stay focus, generally we look better therefore more self esteem and improve social life etc.

Exercise 20 minutes a day, 3 times a week is sufficient to keep us active.  To be healthy?  It takes more than exercise itself to be healthy.  We need to know more about what our body needs and supply to it.  It's demand and supply in a different prospective.  Many many years ago Dr. Linus Pauling and team summarised it well that to stay healthy, we need to :-
  1. Have balanced nutrients
  2. Enough oxygen level / Exercise / Blood circulation
  3. Drink enough water / detoxification
  4. Mental well-being
To be healthy we need to fulfill the 3 criteria below :-
  1. Always have positive thinking
  2. Healthy social life
  3. Body is free of any kind of pain
If we cannot fulfill these 3 criteria, we cannot declare that we're fully healthy.  If we don't have serious sickness, we can only say that we're in semi-healthy state.

In a nutshell, we know what our body needs and we know the 3 criteria to be healthy.  Focus on these and stay on course, that's the least we can do in our part to be healthy.
